Management’s Role in the Successful Launch and Development of Lean Manufacturing

Mr. Tom Hartman was named vice president of operations for the Airbag Division of Autoliv North America in July 2003. Autoliv is the world’s foremost producer of automotive safety systems with worldwide sales of $5 billion.

Tom is responsible for three manufacturing plants in Utah that employ over 2,700 workers. He also mentors an additional ten manufacturing plants in the process disciplines of Autoliv’s Lean Manufacturing System known as APS. For six years prior to the reorganization of Autoliv North America, Tom was responsible for Autoliv Inflators in the U.S. and Japan.

Mr. Hartman joined Autoliv in August of 1996 as vice president of design engineering and product development of Morton International’s Automotive Safety Products Division. Prior to joining Morton International, Mr. Hartman held various production, management, and engineering leadership positions with Federal Mogul Corporation, a leading supplier in the automotive components and replacement parts market.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Indiana University and subsequently studied Business Administration at Butler University.

Tom will outline management’s role in the cultural renaissance that is the driving force behind Autoliv’s transformation into an automotive safety products and Lean manufacturing leader. His discussion will drive home how profoundly Lean manufacturing can change your organization.
