Powering IT in a "Greener" World

 Much is being made of the IT industry's emphasis on "the greening of IT." Witness the Information Technology Council's (ITI) announcement that it has entered into a memorandum of understanding with The Green Grid, a global consortium of companies dedicated to advancing energy efficiency in data centers and computing ecosystems. Clearly, many of these initiatives will have a direct benefit for the utilities serving IT operations. However, there is, as always, a degree of hype in some of the announcements.
This presentation explores these opportunities and issues from an electric utility's perspective. It also expands on how utilities are responding to consumers' demands and government mandates to provide electricity from sources with lower or no CO2 emissions. 
Google's recent announcement describing its major investments in renewable energy technologies is another indication of how IT companies are expanding beyond their original businesses to help create "greener" sources of electricity.
