Paul Schulz, President, Imagination Development
Little Hopper Simulation

This simulation requires participants (through the application of lean principles) to identify and eliminate waste from a process.

Participants become part of either the production or support group, each with specific tasks and responsibilities. Their goal is to improve a process fraught with waste into a lean Little Hopper producing machine.  Along the way lean principles are learned, applied, and evaluated as to their impact on the process.

The simulation will offer challenges (and some frustration), but is a most effective means to experience the powerful tools associated with Lean Manufacturing.

Every iteration is measured and reviewed.  Measurements include:

  • Acceptable parts produced
  • Scrap
  • Parts produced per person
  • WIP (work in process)
  • Profit and loss
  • Throughput time
  • Performance

This simulation is part of a comprehensive training system designed to turn employees into process managers, where process knowledge, control, and improvement are within their purview.
