Nancy Sullivan, Vice President Aromatics/Phenol
Shell Chemical

Developing High-Performance Teams as a Woman Leader

Nancy has been with Shell for 15 years. In her current role, she is responsible for two Chemical businesses generating over $2 billion in yearly revenue. She joined Shell as legal counsel to the company’s major businesses. In 1995, she was assigned to Shell Oil Company’s Business Transformation Team. In this capacity she helped senior leaders and teams throughout the U.S. realize the need for change and develop new business strategies and models that improved business results.

Later, Shell’s managing directors formed the world-wide Leadership and Performance operation team within the Royal Dutch/Shell Group, and Nancy moved to the Netherlands to become one of the team’s original members. As a team member, she traveled to and worked with teams from 30 countries on 6 continents. When she returned to Houston, Nancy began to practice what she had taught for 3 years.

Nancy earned degrees from Texas A&M University and the University of Houston Law Center. She is also a Certified Public Accountant. Nancy grew up in Houston where she coaches girl’s softball, mentors high school students, and serves on several non-profit boards.

Nancy will explore the concepts surrounding the development of high-performance teams. She will discuss the unique strengths women leaders bring to a team, and life experiences that prepare them to develop high-performance teams. She will also explain why some women thrive in this role while others struggle, and the differences between men and women that impact team performance. Traditionally women have placed high value on relationships. As a result, they are well positioned for the workplace of the future and its increasing focus on high-performance teams.
