Stan Gibson is the director of eBizStrategies and Webcast at eWeek. eBizStrategies offers executives and managers the information they need to use IT to gain a strategic advantage in building e-business systems. Gibson is responsible for the eWeek Fast Track of Technology Innovators, which showcases the top implementers of leading-edge e-business systems. Gibson's column, "Just Managing," appears weekly in eWeek and on eWeek Online. He is News Director and Executive Producer of eWeek Webcast, which offers a broad range of streaming audio and video programming for technology professionals. These events include live events, daily news, and weekly commentary and analysis programs.
Gibson has hosted many live Webcast talk shows, trade show keynotes and panels for eWeek Webcast and has appeared as guest host on Computalk, a nationally syndicated radio program. CNBC, PBS's Nightly Business Report, and New England Cable News featured Gibson as a guest commentator. He has delivered keynote addresses at the CAMP Expo in Chicago in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000 and has moderated panel discussions at CAMP on several occasions. He delivered the keynote speech for the March 2000 technology conference for the
Smaller Business Association of New England and for the New York state IT professionals' convention in Albany in 1997. He has been keynote panel moderator at the 1996 SIM Exchange in San Francisco and has moderated panels at Fall Comdex, Spring Comdex, PC Expo, NetWorld+Interop and ComNet. He has given keynote speeches at the Technology Managers Forum Best Practices Awards in New York City annually from 1996 through 2000.
Now in his seventh year at eWeek, Gibson is chairman of eWeek's editorial board, which crafts the publication's editorial positions. He received the 1999 Jesse H. Neal Award of the American Business Press for Best Staff Written Editorials. He was named to the Ziff-Davis Chairman's Circle in 1998. Gibson has served eWeek as deputy news editor, networking editor, assignment editor and department editor and was founding editor of eWeek's NetWorld+Interop Daily News.
Before joining eWeek, Gibson was news editor at Communications Week and software editor and hardware editor at Computerworld. Previously, he was a morning news anchor at WTAG in Worcester Mass. His freelance articles have appeared in many business publications and newspapers.
The Right Stuff for E-business
Do you have the right stuff? Well, do you? Since the rush to build e-businesses began, IT managers have found that many of the rules that worked for them in the past no longer applied in the uncharted waters of Web commerce. The ability to run a tight ship and keep downtime low is great; but that’s not enough anymore. What’s needed now, as never before, are leadership qualities; the willingness to take risks, to say goodbye to the security blanket of the past. Managers have to move with an e-business team to a new location far from the stifling influence of headquarters. And they’ll have to think of new ways of doing business, maybe even cannibalizing the business of their parent company. It all has to be on the table if you are going to be the technology leader of a new e-business. I’ll look at case studies and draw on interviews with IT executives who’ve got the right stuff, with the goal of telling attendees what they’ll have to do to succeed.
